Diego Torre’s Biography

Born in Mexico City, Australian tenor Diego Torre has built a reputation as a leading interpreter of the Italian dramatic repertoire. A longstanding principal artist with Opera Australia, Diego has been acclaimed for his portrayals of Puccini’s leading tenors, notably Cavaradossi in Tosca, Calaf in Turandot, Rodolfo in La bohème and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. He is equally distinguished in Verdi repertoire, having performed Radames in Aida, the title roles in Don Carlo and Ernani, the Duke in Rigoletto, Gustavus in Un ballo in maschera, Gabriele Adorno in Simon Boccanegra, Rodolfo in Luisa Miller and Foresto in Attila. His other prominent roles for the company have included Canio in Pagliacci, Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana, Don José in Carmen, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Eléazar in La Juive, and Faust in Mefistofele. He returns to Opera Australia in 2026 as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Calaf in the company’s new production of Turandot, sings Puccini’s Edgar in Minnesota and Verdi’s Aida at the Sydney Opera House.
International engagements have spanned leading houses in Europe, the Americas and Asia. Performances have included Dick Johnson in La fanciulla del West in Mexico City; Canio for the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Opera Oviedo and Seattle Opera; Calaf and Manrico for Teatro Regio di Torino; Cavaradossi in China, Saarbrücken, Florida, Karlsruhe, Boston and Finland; Calaf with Kansas City Opera and in Oslo; Corrado in Il Corsaro in Parma; Turiddu and further appearances as Cavaradossi and Canio in Genoa; Don José at Eugene Opera and Darmstadt; Foresto for San Francisco Opera; and Rodolfo in Oslo and Darmstadt.
On the concert platform, Diego has sung Verdi’s Requiem, Beethoven Symphony No. 9; Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with Sydney Philharmonia. He was a Domingo-Thornton Young Artist at Los Angeles Opera, where he made his company debut as Don José. Other early career highlights include Conte Ivrea in Un giorno di regno and Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos with Wolf Trap Opera, followed by engagements at The Metropolitan Opera as the Messenger in Aida and Federico in Stiffelio. Further appearances during this period featured Masaniello in La muette de Portici for Dessau Opera, Edgardo for the Savonlinna Opera Festival, and covering Plácido Domingo in the title role of Il Postino at Los Angeles Opera.
