He has graced the stage at world-renowned venues such as the Berlin Philharmonie, Golden Hall of the Musikverein Wien, Berlin Konzerthaus, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Leipzig Opera, Stuttgart Liederhalle, Frankfurt Radio Concert Hall, Brahms-Saal Karlsruhe, Tonhalle Düsseldorf, Carnegie Hall NYC, Chicago Harris Theatre, Boston Symphony Hall, Teatro Massimo Bellini (Italy), Tonhalle Zurich, Auditorio de Galicia (Spain), Royal Festival Stockholm, St. Petersburg Grand Philharmonic Hall, House of Music Moscow, Bayreuth Opera House, Hong Kong City Hall, Great Hall of the People Beijing, Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, Shanghai Grand Theatre, Guangzhou Concert Hall, Chengdu Pride Concert Hall, Seoul Arts Center, GwangJu Concert Hall, Seoul Opera House, New Delhi National Stadium, Mumbai National Center of the Performing Arts and Bangalore Chowdiah Hall and many others. He has conducted numerous orchestras in Europe, Asia and America, showcasing his remarkable versatility as a conductor. He has performed in numerous countries, including Italy, Spain, USA, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Brazil, South Korea, Hong Kong, China, India, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Colombia. Michael Koehler has been the Artistic Director and Music Director of the Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra since 2000, a position in which he has distinguished himself with his brilliant performances. His imaginative and innovative approach to conducting has attracted audiences from across the globe. In 2010, he assumed the roles of conductor and professor at the Seoul University (SMU) in Seoul, Korea. In 2017, he was appointed Professor at the Shanxi University in Taiyuan, China. In 2018, he assumed the role of General Music Director of the Shanxi Symphony Orchestra in Taiyuan, China. In 2021, his performance at the Musikverein was like a delicious musical feast. The masterful interpretation of Brahms’ First Symphony and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto left a lasting impression, and the audience responded with a standing ovation in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. In 2022, he appeared at the National Music Festival of the USA, conducting a brilliant performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. In 2025, he will celebrate a German Night with the National Orchestra of Columbia.
He is in frequent collaboration with distinguished and internationally renowned soloists of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Berlin Staatskapelle and Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (Guy Braunstein, Lothar Strauß, Christian Funke, Roman Trekel and Michael Barenboim). He is frequently conducting renowned operas, including Carmen, The Abduction from the Seraglio, L´elisir d´amore, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Turandot, Madame Butterfly, Tosca, The Bat, and The Merry Widow. In 2022, he was nominated for the OPUS KLASSIK 2022, a distinction that is regarded as the most prestigious accolade in the realm of classical music in Germany. His activities have been supported by grants from the German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Federal Government Minister for Culture and the Media Monika Grütters, and the German Music Council, the German Federal Cultural Foundation, and the Cultural Foundation of Saxony, the City of Leipzig and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation.
Having spent his formative years in Dresden as a solo pianist, he proceeded to Berlin to undertake studies in sound engineering and orchestra conducting. Following his graduation from the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” Berlin (class of GMD Prof. Rolf Reuter, Berlin State Opera), he continued his studies with Maestro Sergiu Celibidache in Munich and at the Schola Cantorum in Paris. He participated in masterclasses led by esteemed pedagogues such as Kurt Masur, Gerd Albrecht, Rolf Reuter, and at the Yehudi-Menuhin-Academy in Gstaad, to name but a few. His academic background is in musicology, having obtained his Doctor Philosophiae from the Humboldt University of Berlin in 1999. In addition to his performing career, he dedicates a part of his time to teaching. Since 1998, he has been working at the Leipzig University of Music and Drama “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in a number of roles, including Head of the Orchestra, Orchestra Conductor and teacher.The release of his music has been undertaken by a number of distinguished record companies, including Sony Music, jpc, Naxos, Kuke and Sommo.
