Career and Achievements

Born in Cagliari in 1992, the Italian bass Alessandro Abis studied vocal technique and interpretation under the guidance of the soprano Elisabetta Scano. He debuted in 2014 in the role of Angelotti in Puccini’s Tosca, at the Teatro Lirico of Cagliari, conducted by Gianluigi Gelmetti. In July 2015, he was discovered by master and mentor Alberto Zedda, under whose supervision he studied in the prestigious Rossinian Academy of Pesaro, where he was selected by Zedda to play the role of Lord Sidney in Il Viaggio a Reims. He also attended the Rossini Opera Academy in Lunenburg (Nova Scotia, Canada).

His Rossinian repertoire includes the roles of Conte Asdrubale in La Pietra del Paragone (Teatro Lirico of Cagliari), Fernando in La Gazza Ladra, directed by Damiano Michieletto (Teatro Petruzzelli of Bari), Don Profondo in Il Viaggio a Reims (Teatro Filarmonico of Verona), Mustafà in L’Italiana in Algeri, directed by Stefano Vizioli (Teatro Filarmonico of Verona, Teatro Verdi of Pisa, and Teatro Sociale of Rovigo), Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Paphos Aphrodite Festival in Cyprus, Teatro Lirico of Cagliari, and Teatro Coccia of Novara), Faraone in Mosè in Egitto (Teatro Verdi of Pisa and Teatro Coccia of Novara), bass soloist in Stabat Mater, conducted by Gérard Korsten (Teatro Lirico of Cagliari), and bass soloist in Petite Messe Solennelle (Teatro Filarmonico of Verona).

In addition to his Rossinian repertoire, he debuted the roles of Don Alfonso in Così fan Tutte (Opéra de Nice and Antropolis Theatre of Antibes), Conte Robinson in Cimarosa’s Il Matrimonio Segreto (Teatro Filarmonico of Verona and Luglio Musicale Trapanese), Leporello in Don Giovanni (Teatro Lirico di Cagliari), Timur in Turandot (Teatro Petruzzelli of Bari and Teatro Comunale of Bologna), Curato in Respighi’s La Campana Sommersa (Teatro Lirico of Cagliari), Ashby in Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West (Teatro del Giglio of Lucca, Teatro Verdi of Pisa, Teatro Pavarotti-Freni of Modena, Teatro Alighieri of Ravenna, and Teatro Goldoni of Livorno), Principe di Bouillon in Adriana Lecouvreur (Teatro Filarmonico of Verona), Pietro in Simon Boccanegra (Teatro San Carlo of Napoli and Teatro Petruzzelli of Bari), bass soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony (Teatro Lirico of Cagliari), Dottor Grenvil in La Traviata (Teatro Massimo of Palermo), Notaro in Don Pasquale (Théâtre Royal of La Monnaie), and Agente in Alberto Savinio‘s Orfeo Vedovo (Teatro Lirico Sperimentale A.Belli of Spoleto).

In July 2017, he participated in the Young Singers Project, Salzburg, under the artistic direction of Evamaria Wieser. That same year, at the Salzburg Festival, he sang with Placido Domingo and Joseph Calleja in Verdi’s I Due Foscari, and played the role of Buff in Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor.

In 2016 he won the first prize at the 70th Concorso Comunità Europea for young opera singers, at the Teatro Sperimentale A. Belli in Spoleto (PG). He also won the Jury Prize at the 2nd edition of CLIP – Concorso Lirico Internazionale in Portofino and the International Award of the “XXVI° Opera- Città di Mondovì” in the Young Singer category.

He has performed roles such as Zuàne in Ponchielli’s La Gioconda, at the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona and Slovene National Opera, and Conte Ceprano in Rigoletto, also at the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona.
