The two tenor roles occupy contrasting places within Leoncavallo’s theatre-within-theatre drama. Canio is the leader of the travelling company and the opera’s tragic centre. His jealousy gradually overwhelms the boundaries between private life and public performance, requiring a tenor capable of dramatic force, emotional exposure, and sustained vocal intensity.
Kakhidze’s appearance as Canio continues his work in Italian lyric-dramatic repertoire. The role forms part of a profile that also includes Turiddu in Cavalleria rusticana, Don José in Carmen, Rodolfo in La bohème, Alfredo in La traviata, and Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor.
Peppe, by contrast, is the company’s lyric tenor and appears as Arlecchino in the comedy performed during the opera. His music introduces a lighter and more stylised theatrical voice before the staged fiction collapses into real violence. Resinelli’s performance therefore contributes an important lyrical contrast to the darker writing associated with Canio, Nedda, and Tonio.
Together, Kakhidze and Resinelli represent two distinct sides of Leoncavallo’s tenor writing: the psychological and dramatic intensity of Canio and the elegance and theatrical precision of Peppe.
The production features costumes by Luisella Pintus, choreography by Luigia Frattaroli, and set-design assistance by Gianpaolo Salis. Luigia Frattaroli also serves as assistant director.
