Hugo de Ana

Career and Achievements

He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He graduated from the Ernesto de la Cárcova Higher School of Fine Arts as professor of Visual Arts and Costume Designer for television and cinema. As director, he is famous for his spectacular sets, as well as his impressive use of lighting. He started out as a technical director and executive producer at the Colón Theater of Buenos Aires. Then he moved on to Santiago de Chile and, after a short while, he began his collaboration with the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. He first presented his work in Italy in 1990, directing Rossini’s opera Moses in Egypt [Mosè in Egitto] in Bologna. Since then he has been collaborating with the most important Italian theaters and the leading opera houses around the world, such as: La Scala in Milan, German Opera of Berlin, Royal Opera House in LondonCovent Garden, Tel Aviv Opera, Tokyo Opera, Arena di Verona and Teatro la Fenice (Venice), Teatro Massimo (Palermo), Teatro Regio (Torino), Teatro de la Maestranza (Seville), among others, as well as he collaborated in international festivals.

He directed, among others, the following works: Die Walküre, La bohème, Otello, Roméo et Juliette, Lucrezia Borgia, Les contes d’Hoffmann, Samson et Dalila, Il trovatore, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Carmen, La sonnambula, Aida, The Merry Widow [Die lustige Witwe], Boris Godunov, Simon Boccanegra, Tosca, Medée. For the GNO he directed the operas Tosca and Madama Butterfly.

He won numerous awards.
