Marco Caria
Career and Achievements
Marco Caria, an Italian baritone, is considered one of the most captivating voices in the international opera scene. Born in Oristano (Sardinia), he began studying music at the age of five. He studied guitar with Maestro Roberto Masala and simultaneously began vocal training at the “L. Canepa” Conservatory of Music in Sassari under the guidance of Anna Maria Pitzalis and Gianni Mastino.
He later participated in numerous singing competitions, earning recognition in prestigious contests such as the “Tito Gobbi», “Domenico Alaleona», “Luciano Neroni», “Iris Adami Corradetti” and “Emmerich Smola” competitions. Through these experiences, he met legendary figures in the opera world, including Giuseppe Taddei, Gigliola Frazzoni, Anita Cerquetti, Gianni Raimondi, Renato Bruson, Mirella Freni, and many others. In 2000, he joined the International Opera Academy of Sulmona, where he was distinguished as the best student.
In 2002, he made his debut as Don Alvaro in Il viaggio a Reims by Rossini at the Teatro Marrucino in Chieti, receiving great acclaim from both the audience and critics. Among his numerous international competition successes, the most notable is his participation in the prestigious Operalia competition by Plácido Domingo in 2007, where he won second prize and the audience special award in Paris. This marked the beginning of his rapid ascent. He made his North American debut as Rodrigo in Don Carlo at the Cincinnati Opera (MainStage debut) and as Don Carlo in La forza del destino at the May Festival. He later returned to Cincinnati to perform as Giorgio Germont in La Traviata and Marcello in La Bohème. His career continued with performances in Pagliacci and Maria Stuarda at Teatro La Fenice in Venice. A particularly significant chapter in his career has been his collaboration with the Wiener Staatsoper, where he has performed in La Bohème, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Madama Butterfly, L’Elisir d’Amore, Simon Boccanegra, Pagliacci, Falstaff, Werther, Lucia di Lammermoor, Roberto Devereux, and, more recently, Andrea Chénier. Other notable engagements include: La Traviata (Giorgio Germont) at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Un Ballo in Maschera (Renato) at Teatro Comunale di Bologna (M. Mariotti/D. Michieletto), Lucia di Lammermoor (Lord Enrico Ashton) at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma (R.Abbado/L. Ronconi), Deutsche Oper Berlin, Liceu de Barcelona, Royal Opera House Muscat, Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, and Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Don Carlo (Rodrigo) in Lima, Maria Padilla (Don Pedro) at the Wexford Opera Festival, Maria Stuarda (Lord Guglielmo Cecil) at Teatro Verdi in Trieste and Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Simon Boccanegra (Paolo Albiani) conducted by Riccardo Muti at Bunka, Kaikan in Tokyo and Teatro Regio di Parma, Pagliacci (Tonio) at Macerata Opera Festival, Rigoletto (title role) at Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Figaro) at ABAO-OLBE in Bilbao (conducted by Ottavio Dantone), Falstaff (Ford) in Los Angeles, La Bohème (Marcello) for the reopening of Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires (conducted by Stefano Ranzani), in Shanghai (conducted by Daniel Oren), on tour in Korea (conducted by Myung-whun Chung), and at Salle Pleyel in Paris, Il Trovatore (Conte di Luna) at Macerata Opera Festival (conducted by Daniel Oren), Lucia di Lammermoor in Beijing, conducted by Valery Gergiev, The gala concert Juan Diego Flórez and Friends at London’s Barbican Centre, alongside Joyce Di Donato. Marco Caria collaborates regularly with esteemed conductors such as Roberto Abbado, Yves Abel, Marco Armiliato, Jordi Bernàcer, Bruno Campanella, Myung-whun Chung, Francesco Ivan Ciampa, Ottavio Dantone, Riccardo Muti, Daniel Oren, Renato Palumbo, Stefano Ranzani, Nello Santi, and Pinchas Steinberg, among others. Recent and Upcoming Engagements Recent performances include Il Corsaro and Rigoletto in Modena, Il Trovatore (Conte di Luna) and Aida (Amonasro) at the Macerata Opera Festival, Il Trovatore in Beijing, Chieti, and Athens, Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Vienna, and Rigoletto at Teatro Comunale di Bologna and Teatro Lirico di Cagliari. He has also returned to Cagliari for Carmen and Pagliacci, performed Un Ballo in Maschera in Barcelona and Vienna, Lucia di Lammermoor in Athens and Beijing (conducted by V. Gergiev), Il Pirata (Ernesto) in St. Gallen, and L’Elisir d’Amore (Belcore), La Bohème, and Simon Boccanegra at Wiener Staatsoper. He recently debuted as Escamillo in Carmen in Cagliari, followed by Andrea Chénier in Tours, Aida at the Baths of Caracalla, Rigoletto in Chisinau, Modena, and Daegu, La Traviata at Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Aida at the Baths of Caracalla, Andrea Chénier and Giovanna d’Arco in Tours, La Bohème in Vienna, Rigoletto in Daegu and Chisinau, Pagliacci in Cagliari, Aida at the Sferisterio of Macerata, Carmen at Teatro Regio di Parma and Reggio Emilia, Simon Boccanegra at Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Tosca in Montpellier, Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Wiener Staatsoper, La Traviata, Cavalleria Rusticana, Nabucco, Otello, and Tosca in Sassari, La Bohème in Tokyo, Un Ballo in Maschera in Beijing, and La Gioconda in Cagliari.
Upcoming engagements include Il Trovatore in Beijing and Jone, ossia l’ultimo giorno di Pompei in Palermo.
