A New Andrea Chénier at Teatro Regio Torino

From June 18 to 29, 2025, Andrea Chénier returns to the stage of Teatro Regio Torino in a new production directed by Giancarlo del Monaco, with Andrea Battistoni conducting the Orchestra and Chorus of the Regio. We are pleased to see both Vittoria Yeo and Adriano Gramigni take part in this project, contributing their musical and interpretive strengths to a key work of the Italian repertoire.

The production marks Battistoni’s first staged opera since his appointment as the theatre’s Music Director and promises a reading faithful to the historical and dramatic weight of Giordano’s score.

The production also involves the Teatro Regio Children’s Choir and Dance School, with a dedicated Anteprima Giovani performance scheduled for June 17.

An International Cast

The cast features Martin Muehle in the title role and, in the role of Maddalena di Coigny, Vittoria Yeo will appear in the performances on June 25 and 28, bringing her expressive vocalism and stage presence to one of the most demanding soprano parts in the verismo repertoire.

The role of Carlo Gérard is entrusted to Claudio Sgura, while Roberta Mantegna will alternate as Maddalena. Among the supporting cast, the bass Adriano Gramigni  will perform the role of Roucher on June 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, and 29.

Andrea Chénier | Umberto Giordano

“A complete triumph. Twenty curtain calls for the artists and maestro,” wrote the publisher Sonzogno in a telegram in March 1896 to announce the overwhelming success of Andrea Chénier to the librettist, Luigi Illica, who had so skilfully transformed into an ardent tragedy the real-life story of a French poet who had fallen victim to the French Revolution. In the opera, Chénier is an idealist, helplessly swept up by the schemes of the Jacobin Terror and hopelessly in love with Maddalena, an aristocrat fleeing the revolutionaries. Victims of Gérard’s lust, the two remain united until the end. Encouraged by a libretto filled with historical details and characters driven by extreme passion, the composer Umberto Giordano reworked revolutionary marches such as La Carmagnole and wrote a true wealth of magnificent arias and duets. Few operas can boast such a great number of memorable pieces, including “Un dì, all’azzurro spazio,” “La mamma morta,” and “Nemico della patria,” to name just a few.
